Inspired by the mention of Cross-F earlier today, I had some fun experimenting with Black Eyed Susan this afternoon. Not quite there yet, but still fun to play. : )

I recorded this a few weeks ago. I pretty much have the notes. Now I just have to figure out how to play it in a more interesting way . . .

I blogged recently about how I felt a need to learn to control my focus as I play so that I get to a point where I know that I can make it through harder tunes just as sure as I know that I can play simple favorites.
I recorded Bob Walters' Hornpipe again today as a test of that focus and I'm getting there. On the parts that aren't quite right, I know exactly what I was thinking. "I hope I won't mess up! That kind of insecurity doesn't do anyone any good, does it?

Is this a tune I picked up from who knows where or did I make it up from parts of tunes that are in my head? Update: No one's told me it's something else, so I've decided to claim the tune as my own and call it the Bum Knee Reel. My first fiddle tune. Kind of fun.

I'm working on a bunch of AEAE tunes and this one is my favorite. I still haven't ironed out all the things I need to work on--it's something different every time--but playing it still makes me happy. I love the rhythm in the B part.

A simple Illinois tune in G. A friend arranged it for mountain dulcimer and I'm playing along.

One of my favorite tunes. I've been working on it with help from David Bragger.

I learned this from Matt Brown's recording for Fiddle Club of the World (Old Town School in Chicago) and the note on the site says it's the "Burnett & Rutherford’s version." It's actually played faster but I think it's kind of pretty slow. I recorded it because I wanted to see if I was as in tune as I thought I was. Nope!

A fun-to-play Dear Old Illinois tune from Harvey Taylor. It's one of my favorites. Recorded earlier today in an empty suburban train station. Good way to pass the time. : )

I'm on a hornpipe kick--good exercise for the bow and brain. This one is from Jim Newton as it appears in the Dear Old Illinois Book. Nice thing about hornpipes is that those hesitations and painfully out-of-tune notes go by fairly quickly. : )

I'm going through a C-tune phase. (laugh) This one is from Dear Old Illinois and as a fun first-time experiment, I recorded some piano chords to see if I could play over the top of them.

Posting in support of the Virtual Fiddle Festival! This tune will always be out of reach, but knowing that doesn't make it any less enjoyable to work on it. The scratchy old Ed Haley recording is on my short list of exquisite tunes. : ) This is a version that I learned from Matt Brown.

A favorite that I’ve been working on recently. Interesting to hear how it’s changed in five years. And how quickly that five years has passed. It’s rough, but I kind of like it that way.

This has become one of my favorite tunes. Alan Jabbour brought it to Fiddle Club and I learned it from the notation posted here: http://oldtownschool.org/connect/fiddleclub/2008/10/14/notation-for-alan-jabbour-tunes/

I think I first heard this tune at a jam but I also bumped into Stelle Elam's version in Dear Old Illinois and Chirps' version on Down in Little Egypt. It's my kind of fiddle tune.

We have a new washing machine and it appears that I no longer have need of a metronome as long as I'm playing in A. So, here (big smile) appearing in public for the first time for your listening pleasure -- Horse and Buggy-O performed by Cynthia and the Whirlpool WTW4800XQ.

I made this as a quick practice recording to help me pick out things to improve. I started with a version arranged by Cathye Lynne Smithwick but as I listen to other versions it's morphing a bit . . .
