I'm working on a bunch of AEAE tunes and this one is my favorite. I still haven't ironed out all the things I need to work on--it's something different every time--but playing it still makes me happy. I love the rhythm in the B part.

that sounded great cynthia. i don't play any tunes that need me to cross tune my fiddle. i'm sort of glad because then i don't have to change my thinking about the finger patterns.

Note-position-wise I thought it would be odd to play cross tuned but I haven't found the thinking part of it hard at all. The only thing I've had to consciously remember is where the G is on the D string is when the D string is really an E. I don't like to read music that's trying to tell me how to play cross-tuned, though. That hardest part is tuning and retuning without having the bridge move and I haven't gotten the hang of that but I will soon have two playable fiddles thanks to ebay and woodwiz and so I'll just keep one in standard and the other in AEAE. That purchase, by the way, was obviously a need and not just a want. Seriously!

Glennis, Emory Bailey's daughter thinks that During the Civil war a prisoner of war made up this fiddle tune Camp Chase because the guard said he would release anyone who played a good fiddle tune. Has anyone else heard this background story?

I have heard a similar story, yes--one of a contest where the winner was to be released. There are a couple of wonderful double-stops at the end of the B part and I've heard that they were added in during the contest and that they won it for the successful prisoner. Of course, I have no idea if it's true or not!
