A fun-to-play Dear Old Illinois tune from Harvey Taylor. It's one of my favorites. Recorded earlier today in an empty suburban train station. Good way to pass the time. : )

I really appreciate that comment and I'd be really curious to know what you like about the tune and what seems different about it. (The tune itself -- not my playing of it.)

Cyndy,
I would guess that this tune is pretty old, or was very poppular, or both. As widespread as it seems to be it may have been a minstrel tune.
Its generally played in A. The common version is on Oldtime jam ( There's several in The music library in FHO too).
I. was aware of Pappy Taylor for years( I may have done some work for him at one time). I was a great fan of the Indian Creek Delta boys while there were playing, too. But (he said with regret), I don't ever remember this tune.
The A part is almost a mere transposition into D, but the rest of it is REALLY cool.
Don't knock your playing of the tune. Its very good. My experience is that with a poor player, you can't even recognize what's going on. You are far past that stage. You're fiddler, and a good one at that. I have nothing much to do today but fiddle around, and part of that will be learning this tune...Thanks
Wayne

That's really interesting. I don't hear the other Boatman melodies in this tune but maybe that's because I never really thought about it. I'll have to really do some careful listening now!
I see the B part as dancing between D and A chords in a rhythmic sort of way and, actually, I couldn't tell you what I'm playing on the various strings but it sure is fun!
And, you're right. I am a fiddler. I don't quite know when it happened but I love, love, love this music. It's on my mind pretty much all the time in one form or another--and it's a pretty wonderful way to make my way through the rest of my life. : )
