This is a sample for learning to play on two strings. I have played the tune slowly, in D, the first time thru, on one string. The second time thru adds the open string (A and D) drones. The third time is up to speed with rhythmic embellishment.

This tune is played almost exactly like Kansas Old Time Fiddler, Amos Chase, played it. Amos travelled all over the US winning many Old Time Fiddle Contests back in the 60's, 70's and 80's. He is the father of one of my fiddle students and we are working on creating a website with his history. Amos is one of our few well known Kansas Old Time FIddlers and even placed at Weiser many years ago. He has a charming style to his tunes and played for many dances over the years.

After listening to a lot of different styles of this tune as the tune of the week I decided to blend some of those styles into my own. It was very fun learning about the history of the tune and hearing all the different versions.

This was the Tune of the Week for April 12, 2010. I am playing it slow without the drones or doublestops so you can learn it.

I wrote this little tune yesterday. We're having a lot of icy weather here and it's cancelled a couple of my programs and a band job and probably lessons for the next couple of days. So, I decided to burn a little creative energy and honor it with a fiddle tune. I'll dedicate it to Chirps since it's a style he might play and I really enjoyed listening to him and his band when they were here last month. Let me know if you think I have plagerized some other tune. It's hard to not to do when you have a lot of music in your had. The beginning, (you'll love this old time fans...) was inspired by the beginning of the Mozart Violin Concerto number one. Seriously!

I had to record this tune for my guitar player so I thought I'd share it with you guys too. Seems like several of you really like the waltzs. I am playing on a Richard Williams Sr. Violin 2006 from KC Strings, courtesy of Woodwiz while my vintage fiddle is getting a tune-up that it has needed for a LONG time. This fiddle is really nice for the money. It is very easy to play and even more responsive to the touch than my good fiddle. Evil Temptor.

I have been working on this a while. It's getting better. Sorry it's just me with no accompaniment. I am working on how to record myself playing backup with guitar and mando. I just really got attached to this tune. We are working on it with my band.

This is a little clip played on my new 5 string from KC Strings. It's brand new and sounds like it's been played for a year already. Got the nice brightness of the fiddle high end doesn't it? Also pretty cool because it's been played by Micheal Cleveland, Brinttney Haas, Darol Anger, and several other great players that really liked it too. Nice way to break in a new instrument.

Here's a good ol tune by Arthur Smith I believe. I did steal a couple of licks from Kenny Baker. I can't help it, he's one of my fiddlin' heroes. It's a snapply little tune. Hope you enjoy it.

Can you ever get tired of playing this? I love this tune and it's one of the first ones that I learned!
