Played by Oscar Sherwood Scholes (1891 - 1984), at Buckhorn, Arkansas. Recorded in 1971. Second by Bobby Blair. Os called this "Bodard Waltz", but it was known by the fiddlers in the Younger family, in the same area, as the "Bardot Waltz", or the "Bordeaux Waltz". The latter is probably the correct name, with the others being transliterations.

This is but an excerpt, taken from a larger file, of my friend Sam, who is now 83, and still a great dance-fiddler.

Played by James Eugene "Gene" England (15 April 1927 - 20 April 1995), in April of 1963, at Mountain View, Arkansas, though he lived just north of Bee Branch, Arkansas. Gene learned to fiddle from his mother, Veora Hightower England, who learned from her father Jim Hightower. Gene read no music, and played the fiddle in the crook of his arm, rotating the fiddle, rather than the bow, for string crossings. All tunes ended up being modified for square or jig-dancing, in the Ozarks, sooner or later. This one is no exception. The tempo is about normal for that.

Played by Os Scholes, on the occasion of his 90th birth-day, 8 May 1981. Seconded by Sam Younger, on guitar. Os learned this tune from his brother-in-law, Jasper Morris, in the late 1800s, but never knew the name of it. It was known, however, as Fort Gibson. The tune was known to have been played by the brothers Stan and Lothey Younger, but they may have learned it from Os.

Fiddle: Sam Younger Banjo: Luther Horton Guitar: Ervin Freeze Made at Luther Horton's house, 1980 Luther Horton played an up-picking style of banjo, common to the Ozarks. He learned this as a young man, from Collie Dodson. Collie died in 1939. Luther did play a Martin Vega resonator banjo, which leads one to think of bluegrass banjo, and does tend to over-power the other instruments in this recording.

Played by Oscar Sherwood Scholes (1891-1984). He was 88 years of age when this recording was made. This is Os's version of Willott's Horn-Pipe, though he called it by the title given, after a neighbour who lived up the road from him. It is played in a manner consistent with how a dance-fiddler from this area would have played it, as all tunes were.
