Banjo Workshops in Saratoga, NY May 5 CAFE LENA

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Saturday May 5     Banjo Summit
$25 for each workshop
$60 for all three:
  Banjo Summit Workshops

11:00 AM—12:30 PM
Julie Duggan: Clawhammer Banjo Magic for Starters
Starting from scratch! Picking up a banjo getting to understand how it "works," how it is tuned, and the basic fundamentals of the right and left hands. We also cover learning tunes from ear and using tablature. This is an in depth holistic approach to just gaining an understanding of this magical instrument. (* to take this class all you need is the desire to want to learn about the banjo or a tiny bit of playing experience.)

1:00 PM—2:30 PM
Bob Altschuler: Essential Bluegrass Banjo Techniques
Bob will guide you through a hands-on workshop including right and left hand approaches for precision and good tone; effective left hand techniques (slide, hammer on, pulloff, choke and chime); practice exercises and just enough theory. Linking moveable chord shapes and basic improvisation may also be covered, depending on time available and student levels. (For beginner through intermediate level players).

3:00 PM--4:30 PM
Dave Kiphuth: An in depth examination of Round Peak
Clawhammer- that bubbling, North Carolina rolling style that grabs people. We will spend time on important right and left hand techniques, rhythms that capture that "dooka-dahka" sound and tunes that illustrate all the magic! (This is geared for clawhammer players who are very familiar with the instrument and the frailing style, although the class will be tailored to the overall level of the students)

My Instruments:
I have been learning tunes like a sponge ....I am a banjo player but no on to the fiddle...so much fun..

Favorite Bands/Musicians:
I enjoy Pappa John Creech! I have a huge list but here are some: The Andrew Sisters, Tommy Jarrell, Bunt Stephens, Skillet Lickers, Mike Jarboe, Fiddlin' Joe Robertson from White Creek, NY also known as Stonewall Joe, the Ventures....The Good Ol' Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia (1974!!!), and the list goes on! I enjoy listening to Kentuky Fiddle tunes as well as Round Peak type players. I listen to oldtimey music most of the time but have always enjoyed classic rock, singers and standards, and hot gypsy jazz.

www.myspace.com/dirtroadmolly As a kid my favorite past time was listening to my records on my record player. I never look at the TV; I grew up playing the guitar and began banjo in the early '90s. My band is Dirt Road Molly and we play oldtimey tunes; fun times! www.myspace.com/dirtroadmolly or www.banjofrailer.com I collect banjos and like to work on them. Never a boring moment! Looking to learn the fiddle; any help out there!!!!
