Jody's been playing this with me since I was a pup-fiddler , over 30 yrs ago he first taught me this tune ( wow, has it been so long ??) Its called " Up Jumped the Devil ".... Im backing him up on a slightly out of tune banjo ..(.Jody switches keys very quickly -doesn't wait long for the banjo player to re-tune ...LOL ) Jody fought in the battle of Saipan in the Pacific - and that was nothing compared to the first time we literally had to drag him up onstage to play the fiddle ...said getting onstage was the scariest thing he ever did , even scarier then fighting on Saipan , and he meant it !

Jody likes Ragtime Annie .... says its a good tune , easy on the hands and you can still play it even when you're in your 90's , so remember that as you get to be an old fiddler !!!

I'm pulling out my Gaspe tunes today for recording .... Tony Drody taught me a tune popular in Douglastown at the time ... Fat Molassas ...... Erskin Morris could really play the great authentic version of this French tune ..... how Im playing it today is how I remember Tony showing me, more or less .... I can't get the fancy percussion footwork going and I don't have a backup player for timing ...so Im adding my banjos to fill in the sound alittle

This is my first contribution to the Gaspe fiddle preservation ...LOL I used to drive long distances to play with the Gaspe fiddlers of Douglastown , an Irish village in Gaspe that is no more... Just about the whole village played dance music ....here are friends of Erskin Morris , another great Gaspe fiddler ... This is Cyril DeVouge and Bridgette Drody backing him up on guitar ..... Cyril was close to 80 years old and had a hearing aid in each ear when he recorded this ..... can you imagine ? His bowing was hypnotic and complex .... he is one of the reasons I play the fiddle the way I do !

Im on the fiddle ...playing about as fast as Im able ...Don is very solid and driving on his banjo ... he makes it sound easy

Here's a tune I knew years before I ever picked up a fiddle .. I had a recording of Uncle Dave Macon playing Rabbit in the Pea Patch .... what a great performer he was, I would have loved to have caught one of his shows back in the day . I tried it on the cassette machine tonight, came out pretty good so I kept it .

For you Chanot fiddle fans ... took my Chanot to the diner last night and jammed with a 90 yr. old friend Jody who's backing me up on guitar .... he said he didn't know my tunes but he sure did great with the chords ! If you hear a buzzing in any of my diner tunes, its because our dulcimer playing friend , Rich, was getting in on the act too .
