I love to play contra dances. There's something really remarkable about the synergy between dancer and musician. From my perspective, it's one of the most gratifying experiences as a musician.
I first had the opportunity to play dances through my involvement with a group named the Carolina Tunecroppers. David White was our fiddler and I usually played guitar, although I would occasionally twin the fiddle part on mandolin.
It's been a great experience for me as a fiddler to get to the point where I can play a dance as the lead fiddler. Our current group is called the Wolf Moon String Band. And it was formed almost by accident! The fiddler for another group my wife was in couldn't make a dance & I substituted. I had played fiddle at a dance with an earlier group I was in called the Blue Dawg String Band. But, it had been a while. Guess I made the best of the opportunity, as I've been playing dances somewhat regularly ever since.
Hope to keep playing dances!

For years, I was satisfied being a guitar and mandolin player. Learning to play fiddle has ruined my life! (no, not really!!!). I am environmental engineer who has played guitar for over 30 years. I started out mostly playing folk & folk rock. But, once I took up the fiddle, I transitioned to playing old time and now have a larger collection of old time music than any other genre of music. It used to be mostly blues, bluegrass, classic rock, and jazz! I'm become fascinated with the possibilities of playing the fiddle.
