Florida Blues

Posted by sawsometunes on Wednesday, February 4, 2009

I have started working on a great tune, Florida Blues.  The version I started from was recorded by Trevor & Travis Stuart on their latest album.  It's a fun tune to play.

Guess I find myself with a bit of the blues these days.  I had hoped to go to Suwannee Banjo Camp next month in Florida.  But, I lost my job the second week of January and now am not sure I'll be able to go.

I play guitar too and have enjoyed playing the blues for years.   I can't say I play blues on the fiddle often.  But, it would be fun to dabble in this genre occasionally.

Heck!  I guess Florida Blues is as good a place to start as any!

Mighty fine tune, both of them. I'll guess you mean the Arthur Smith tune? What key?

Thanks, Carl! I love Arthur Smith. Can't play like him, but it's inspirational to hear him.

Hope something works out for you in the job dept. I'm self-employed and have had dry spell recently myself and it kind of gets to you after a little while... Case in point, here I am reading the fiddle hangout in the middle of the day... ideally, I'd be working right now... ah well, I've seen dry spells before... fiddling is a good tonic ... I used to know a Florida blues on the acoustic guitar... any chance its the same one?
*Hey , just noticed that one Carl linked to above is it I think... any chance this was a Blind Blake thing? I used to know lots of his stuff..

Steve: Thanks. I'm not familiar with a Florida Blues done on guitar by Blind Blake. Most of the Blake I'm familiar with is either from "The Essential Blind Blake" album I have or has been performed by one of my favorite modern blues artists, like Scott Ainsle, Roy Bookbinder, or Ernie Hawkins. I think as mentioned above the Florida Blues source most people quote is Arthur Smith. It may even have been written by him. Not sure about that. I actually learned my version from an album by Trevor & Travis Stuart. Being twins, their banjo & fiddle work is astoundingly tight, to a degree rarely heard elsewhere. They only have two recordings I know of, but I really enjoy them.
