We bought our small grocery story from an older couple who wanted to retire.. On the day that we took over daily operations I asked Lavern, one of the retiring owners, what the first thing was that she was going to do now that she no longer owned a grocery store.. She said, "I'm going to go and buy a fresh head of lettuce." I thought that that was an odd answer coming from someone who had owned a grocery story. About a week later my wife asked me to bring a head of lettuce home with me from the store when I finished work. I went to the produce counter, looked at the lettuce and laughed.. Naturally, I was going to take the OLDEST head of lettuce because the customers wouldn't buy an old head...For the several years that we owned the store we ate the limpest produce, the 'iffyest' meat and the stalest bread...When we sold the store one of the first things that I did was ....buy a fresh head of lettuce...
