Excited to be doing a St Pats gig with a wonderful young person on pennywhistle. He is 11 and a true wunderkind on the instrument. He's come to a couple of jam sessions and he picks up new tunes like a sponge, knows how to play variations on a theme on the fly and I can see if he keeps up with it, I think he'll be a real force professionally. He got asked to play at some venue for St Pats and he asked me if I would accompany him. I generally don't play St Pats or NYE, being amateur hour for drinkers, but I want to see and help this boy with stage work; I think its his first paying geg in front of an audience.
If it works out well, I might even consider asking him to join the pirate band. He's young but my own sons started with it at 11 and 13. I briefly talked with his Dad about this, but I think the fact that we are away usually Sat and Sun (and sometime Fri and Mon) and he sees pirates in general as a less savory group of individuals may be issues. But I told his Dad the money is like real $$$ (I put my boys thru college on pirate money), we will challenge him musically and it'll be real experience for him to see if he wants to play pro or semi-pro.
