After several years of thinking about it, composing new tunes, practicing, planning, raising money, recording, mixing, writing, and designing, the first run of my new CD The Shortest Day is due for delivery this Friday, May 15 - yee haw!! I’m very happy with this new album: 15 tracks including nine original pieces, with accompaniment on many of the tracks by some of the best musicians I know - Carl Jones, Erynn Marshall, and Bobb Head. A number of the pieces are pared-down, simple arrangements, some solo fiddle, some just me singing and accompanying myself on fiddle or banjo. It’s all firmly rooted in traditional music, including the originals. At the same time I wanted to allow some space for the music to include some not-so-typical-for-oldtime ideas in a most natural way. The sound is wonderful thanks to the recording and mixing work of Joe Dejarnette of Studio 808a in Floyd, VA, and the disk mastering by David Glasser of Airshow Mastering in Boulder, CO. I can not only wait for you to hear it, but to see it as well, because David Lynch of Asheville’s Lynch Graphics has done an absolutely beautiful job with the package design.
The official release date is June 6 - that’s Saturday, and there will be a joint CD release party at the Mount Airy fiddlers convention for The Shortest Day and for my pals Erynn Marshall’s and Carl Jones, absolutely wonderful new CD Sweet Memories...Never Leave. If you're planning to attend Mount Airy this year, I hope you'll stop by!
