Here's me accompanied by me again on banjo playing Wayne Erbsen's simple beginner version of Ida Red. Also appearing again my son, who part way through decided he'd like me to quiet down. Not what I'd call smooth playing but a little bit of progress I think/hope.

Keep sawing away! Its actually not bad! Your intonation is off to a good start ...its just the wrist and fingers you have to make the wrist more hinge like and flexible and pul from the elbow instead of moving the whole arm as a unit......
Can I get an "amen"

Try switcjing from the thumb in the notch under the stick, to the thumb under the frog. I started doing "classical" style but then switched to "sushi" (suzuki) style with the thumb under the frog....worked for me, never looked back

And the congregation says, 'AMEN!'
Thanks for the comments, Erik. Since you wrote similar stuff on the Sound off thread I responded to your advice there :-)
I do appreciate the time you take to help tho'--it's the main reason I have to post videos at the moment--getting advice & helpful hints, I mean. They're sure not meant to entertain!

You're doing awesome...but then again, I'm new too!......I'm basically just regurgitating all the stuff that the rest of the guys here told me in the beginning......the folks here are really helpful, I think the FHO is alot more laid back then the BHO....not so many CIA operatives and back-seat-banjo/fiddle instructors Drop-Thumb "yes" drop-thumb "no" drop-thumb "yes" drop-thumb "no" ( you know what I mean...LOL

Thanks Erik!
I don't know if its really more laid back the BHO though--I've looked at some of those pattern bowing threads...and the threads about how bad the pattern bowing threads get!

A good'n DB....you're better'n I was after one month fer shore. Keep at it. It's not true that practice makes perfect, BUT....it makes it recognizable, then better, then good, then purdy good, then expert/professional. PERFECT...( never ), specially on tha fiddle.
Now, if'n I was as good on fiddle as you are on tha banjer, I'd be purdy darn good. Especially like yer "Saddle Old Kate".
