Fall Rambles: October 2014

It’s always amazing when October rolls around. Summer has left us leaving only a blurr of memories that we fondly revisit amidst preparation for the cooler months here at our little country house in Galax, Virginia. This year Carl Jones and I taught at eight fiddle camps throughout North America including: the Festival of American Fiddletunes (Washington), Sore Fingers (England), Augusta Old-Time Week (West Virginia), Blue Ridge Music Week/Mars Hill (North Carolina), Midwest Banjo Camp (Michigan), Fiddleworks (BC, Canada), Sunshine Coast School of Celtic Music (BC, Canada), Cowan Creek Mountain Music School (Kentucky). One of the things we both find very rewarding is sharing music with others – whether they are young and young at heart. We also sure enjoyed teaching, performing or jamming at many stellar festivals this summer such as Hoppin’ John, Mount Airy, Clifftop, Mountaineer Week, Galax Fiddlers Convention, Henderson Fest, Rockbridge, Bear on the Square and the Peacham Acoustic Music Fest in Vermont. We are grateful for all the friends, house concert hosts, musicians who played with us, kind people who put us up, promoters, community organizers, radio DJs and especially the folks who came to our shows on our eastern, western, northern and southern tours and our trip to the UK. Thanks!!

We have a brand, new website! Please check out Dittyville.com This site will really grow in the next month or two.

Looking ahead Carl and I are excited that in two days we head into the recording studio to start working on our first duet album. We’re making plans, practicing and picking some of our favorite song-duets, traditional tunes and originals too for this project. Carl has even written a beautiful new song that will be on there. We will be recording at “Joe Bass” Dejarnette’s in Willis, VA starting this Wednesday. Stay tuned for updates and we’ll let you know how it’s coming along.

This month, I will travel to Alberta, Canada to teach old-time fiddle at a Bluegrass North.  Carl and I will then head to Augusta October Old-Time Week  to teach fiddle and guitar classes. November will bring us to Illinois, Ohio, and Ontario on tour. Then in December we will embark on our biggest tour yet (6000+ miles) from Virginia, through the southern states (VA, TN, AL, LA, NM, AZ), and then heading north from California to Washington and across the border into British Columbia. On our return trip we’ll be cutting diagonally through the country (ID, MO) until we reach the Blue Ridge Mountains. It will be quite an adventure! Carl and I sure look forward to meeting folks, jamming, getting together with old friends/family on the way. Hope you’ll come see us if we’re in your town!

For those who have asked here are the camps we already know we are teaching at in 2015:

Mandolin Camp North (MA) - Erynn and Carl

Bluff Country Gathering (MN) – Erynn and Carl

Blue Ridge Music Week (Mars Hill, NC) – Erynn and Carl

Kaufmann Kamp (TN) – Erynn (jam leader)

Swannanoa Gathering: Old-Time Week (NC)– Erynn and Carl

American Banjo Camp (WA) – Erynn teaching fiddle track

Alabama Folk School (AL) – Erynn teaching fiddle (Int-Adv)

In January & February we are planning performances in Virginia Beach, Florida and the UK.  The traveling life is eased by the good company we meet along the road. Hope to see you! Thanks for your support of our music and we appreciate you stopping by.

Have a great fall everyone!

Warmly, Erynn and Carl
