Rethinking My Involvement at the Fiddle Hangout

Posted by fiddlepogo on Wednesday, July 16, 2014

I jokingly said that in a recent thread, "My work here is finished!" with "here" referring to the thread, BUT...

it occurred to me afterwards that, maybe I'm done (mostly) here at the Fiddle Hangout.

Health problems are leaving me with less mental clarity for things like EDITING posts, especially considering the 15 minute limit, and that probably results in more friction and misunderstanding.  And the health problems are leaving me with less energy and mental clarity for DEALING with friction and misunderstanding.

I need to spend less time on the computer, and more time focusing on dealing with my health issues.

A local jamming opportunity has sprung up, and I also need to free up more time for that.

And also, it has occurred to me (partly due to having lost 3 good members here in the last year) that I'm at the age where I need to think about what I'm going to leave behind.   I'm thinking I need to do more recording.... and I need to free up more time for that, and for practicing to be ready for that.

I'm thinking I may continue to blog and post recordings here.  I especially like the availability of the playlists function.  I already have a couple of themed playlists, and I would like to do more.  It might also be a way of making my music available to seniors in facilities if at some point I can no longer "gig". Blogging and recording would give me enough of a presence here that friends can continue to interact, if they so choose.

But I think I need to stay away from the forums.  Or at least the Fiddle related ones.  It's really the fiddle-oriented topic threads that are the biggest time-sink, for me. They seem to draw LONG POSTS out of me.... and LOTS of them.  And often at times that really aren't convenient.

Maybe if I just  continue to START threads, including polls. Starting theads, and non-fiddle oriented threads seem to be pretty much in and out, small time investments.

The Off-topic section is popular over at the Banjo Hangout.... seems to be a way for people that are burnt out on the controversies of the instrument related topics to kick back, have fun, and still be part of the community there.

We need your insight here Pogo. Maybe a little less posting will work out. I'm trying to be on the internet less and on my fiddle more. You can lose track of time on this thing! I want to use the internet as a tool to learn and find products without driving or calling a store where it's almost impossible to talk to a human. I think we are a big fiddle family so don't leave home we care about you and all the fiddle family members.

It sounds like you're getting ready to die! OK, I hope you'll take that comment with a slice of humor, as I intended, though it didn't sound that way. Seriously, Michael, in whatever capacity you continue with here, we'll all be interested in what you do. You are a member of a small and very devoted community. Don't spend so much time on the computer. My god, what if we all had 12,000+ posts? But you don't need to keep posting on everything that sparks your interest. We do hope to keep hearing your take on some issues though. Just not bowing (smiley). I wish you good luck and good health.

Blog and post recordings. I like the sound of that. I really enjoy it when community members share tunes -- polished tunes, tunes in progress, tunes with a question attached. We need more of that here!

Every allergy season for the last couple of years has left my immune system so thrashed, that I struggle with infections of some kind in late June, early July. It's hard to say how many more years I'll be able I'll be able to keep things going. Things seem to get better by August, until next allergy season. I'm also living with a wife who is very sick, and at least THINKS she could go soon. Those things, plus modon, OTJ, and Rich Dissmore checking out has got me thinking along those lines.
I'm not saying I'm going to be gone tomorrow, but I may not have THAT many more years left.... or enough years with energy and health left to do things I want to do... like record more... so I need to stop putting it off.

The thing about an hour spent on a post is that pretty soon, it's buried in the archives. Tunes in my music section stay accessible... and when I think about it are probably going to bring more enjoyment than a long post about bowing or whatever!

In a situation like this you need to ask yourself, "What would Jeremiah Hogslop do?" and then proceed accordingly.... Of course it'll be sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo different without your insightful insights, your sagacious sagacities, your left hemishperic diagramming of all things related to patterns; moreover, you serve as my main foil on the forum, you providing all the aforementioned good things and I the...the...well...hmmmmmmm. But seriously I'm guessing your allergies bother you as my migraines do, so you have to look after yourself first. I sure wish you could find something for your %^&*^((??@#@ allergies.

If I had to choose between playing with others and spending time on FHO, I'm not sure that it would be much of a choice. I'm sure that nobody would disagree that health and spousal health are much higher priorities than the interwebz. I agree with Humbled.....WWJHD?

Don't kid yourself Mr Pogo. You have left a excellent work in your wake... right here on the Hangout. Your thousands and thousands of comments, although long are a treasure for someone looking to learn a few things or willing to challenge themselves and what they think they already know. I have read many of your posts years after you posted them…the search tool is a wonder of modern fiddling information gathering and I use it frequently. I may not always agree with what you post, but I always take you seriously and wonder if…just perhaps…I am wrong. Heh heh heh… Wishing you health and fiddling joy from Vermont. Ok, thats enough for this post its getting long….and I also have a reputation to uphold.

And I was just thinking...after reading fiddlerjoebob's post...that Mr. Pogo's postings are so good that even when he's wrong--he's almost right.

Pogo….Write a book…with a cd. Collect the wit and wizdom of Fiddlepogo. what the hey. I would buy it.

I would write a book myself but I don't really know anything. You got that part together. However, an editor would be a good idea what with your, ehem, ah, non-brevity issues…

Oh, wait…Humbled, you could do the editments. Yes, thats it. Well, come to think of it, Hum has some issues with verbaciousness and runcabularity that might need to be contraped and brevilated, but that is a small matter if you know something.
