AND YES, "On The Road Again!" No sooner do I get back from the Spring Tour Part 1 to Seattle and back than it is time for, you guessed it, Spring Tour Part 2 - Heading East. Here's what it looks like so far. I am working on a stop at The Jalopy Theater and Music School on May 21 as we turn back to head over to the Ohio Homestead but that is not firm as of this moment. I'm still looking for a couple of stops along the way from NYC to Southern Ohio so contact me if you have any ideas or want to set up a show and/or workshop along the way. And yes, I'll be available in Ohio for lessons and such starting June 1 with Old Time Fiddle and Banjo camp there July 18-21. To to the website to keep in touch as the rest of the tour develops.
Play Nice,

Jam Workshop - Play Nice with Others Banjos and Fiddles together! In the traditional old-time world, a jam or session is where musicians get together to play music. Whether it’s just a fiddle and a banjo or includes other instruments, the desired sound is as an ensemble – without “breaks” or “solos”, microphones, sound systems, or performance tricks. The goal is to play together and produce a unified sound, no matter what instrument you play. We’ll work on techniques as well as tunes as we learn to Play Nice together. Dan is an experienced teacher of the Appalachian old-time music style. His influential collections “Old-Time Festival Tunes for Clawhammer Banjo” and “Old-Time Festival Tunes for Fiddle and Mandolin” (Mel Bay publications) have defined much of the jam repertoire over the last 20 years. Cost is $30 PER workshop. |

A Concert and workshop weekend in Rochester, NY! I can’t tell you how long it has been since I have been to Rochester. I even lived there for a while, so I am very excited to get up there to do a concert and workshops (clawhammer, fiddle and jamming) at Bernunzio’s! The schedule at the moment is as follows: Friday May 9 at 7 PM An Evening with Dan Levenson – An intimate evening of musical conversation. Dan’s one-man show with Clawhammer Banjo, Appalachian Fiddle, songs and stories of life and the road. With the banjo and fiddle, stories and songs Dan tells of growing up with the music of the United States. Of learning what it means to have music a part of life and meet the people throughout this nation and others who share that music. Many who attend may have similar stories. Your parents or grandparents may have played this music. Indeed many of you DO play music though few have gotten as carried away as Dan has over the years. Players and listeners will love it just the same and are the most important component of the music that built this nation. Saturday, May 10 1 - 2:30 PM - Double & Drop Thumb Banjo - Basic Clawhammer Banjo This workshop will strengthen your basic skills and teach you the key to creating the percussive sound of the “Double-thumb and Drop-thumb” techniques. You will learn to double-thumb, drop- thumb, the “Galax Lick” and enhance your ability to play any tune by integrating the rhythm and the melody to get that Southern Appalachian old-time banjo sound! 3:00 - 4:30 PM - Learn a Tune, Build a Tune – Clawhammer Style The best way to learn tunes in the old-time tradition is by ear. Once you know a tune, the subtle variations that make it interesting - both musically and rhythmically - use techniques like double thumb, drop thumb, the “Galax Lick”, skip strokes, bass and scale runs, chord options, and triplets. In this workshop, we will build a tune starting with the chorded backup, and then add rhythmic and melodic variations that can help you to blend with others or stand out on your own.
1 - 2:30 PM - Old Time Fiddle for All - Whether you want to learn the basics or solidify the skills you already have, this workshop will enhance your old-time fiddle playing. Appalachian old-time fiddle is all about the bowing style; bowing lends control to the rhythm while good fingering technique and intonation gives you control of the tune. Learn to get comfortable with your instrument and how to “HEAR” the right notes while working on the rhythmic quality of your bowing. We will cover bowing and fingering basics, as well as the role of “cross tuning” (e.g. AEae; DDad; AEac#).This workshop is designed for all levels of player. 3:00 - 4:30 PM - Old Time Fiddle and Banjo Jam Workshop - Play Nice With Others In the traditional old-time world, a jam or session is where musicians get together to play music. Whether it’s just a fiddle and a banjo or includes other instruments, the desired sound is as an ensemble – without “breaks” or “solos”, microphones, sound systems, or performance tricks. The goal is to play together and produce a unified sound, no matter what instrument you play. Dan is an experienced teacher of the Appalachian old-time music style. His influential Mel Bay publications “Old-Time Festival Tunes” - (separate volumes for Clawhammer Banjo and Fiddle/Mandolin) and the recently released “Old-Time Favorites” (separate volumes for Clawhammer Banjo and Fiddle/Mandolin) have defined much of the jam repertoire over the last 20 years. We’ll pick a few and learn em, play em and jam em! Cost is $25 for workshop; $45 for two. |
