Something old, something new… A Work-cert! Imagine, if you will, a concert An Evening with Dan Levenson, combined with a workshop. You get a Work-Cert!. Some thoughts so far are attendees would be mostly pickers and might welcome the chance to pick a tune with me and then folks discuss what they heard and saw. Since this is being held in a private home, you need to write directly to pre-register for this new event. |

Workshops at Dusty Strings Saturday, April 5 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM - Double & Drop Thumb Banjo - Clawhammer This workshop will strengthen your basic skills and teach you the key to creating the percussive sound of the “Double-thumb and Drop-thumb” techniques. You will learn to double-thumb, drop- thumb, the “Galax Lick” and enhance your ability to play any tune by integrating the rhythm and the melody to get that Southern Appalachian old-time banjo sound! 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM - Learn a Tune, Build a Tune – Clawhammer Style The best way to learn tunes in the old-time tradition is by ear. Once you know a tune, the subtle variations that make it interesting - both musically and rhythmically - use techniques like double thumb, drop thumb, the “Galax Lick”, skip strokes, bass and scale runs, chord options, and triplets. In this workshop, we will build a tune starting with the chorded backup, and then add rhythmic and melodic variations that can help you to blend with others or stand out on your own.
12:30 PM - 2:30 PM - Old Time Fiddle for All - Whether you want to learn the basics or solidify the skills you already have, this workshop will enhance your old-time fiddle playing. Appalachian old-time fiddle is all about the bowing style; bowing lends control to the rhythm while good fingering technique and intonation gives you control of the tune. Learn to get comfortable with your instrument and how to “HEAR” the right notes while working on the rhythmic quality of your bowing. We will cover bowing and fingering basics, as well as the role of “cross tuning” (e.g. AEae; DDad; AEac#).This workshop is designed for all levels of player. 2:45 PM - 4:45 PM - Jam Workshop - Play Nice With Others In the traditional old-time world, a jam or session is where musicians get together to play music. Whether it’s just a fiddle and a banjo or includes other instruments, the desired sound is as an ensemble – without “breaks” or “solos”, microphones, sound systems, or performance tricks. The goal is to play together and produce a unified sound, no matter what instrument you play. Dan is an experienced teacher of the Appalachian old-time music style. His influential collections “Old-Time Festival Tunes for Clawhammer Banjo” and “Old-Time Festival Tunes for Fiddle and Mandolin” (Mel Bay publications) have defined much of the jam repertoire over the last 20 years. Cost is $40 PER workshop. |

We are still considering a stop in Scotia, CA (south of Eureka) for some sort of show and perhaps some workshops there but at the moment it is not looking like this will happen. Could use another one or two stops along the way to or from Washington and from Scocia to Tucson so if interested in hosting this traveling man and his wife, drop me a note.
We get back to Tucson around April 12ish to pack up the rig to head east on April 22. First stop is a tentative workshop or two in Albuquerque, NM on the 23rd then on to Garden City, KS for a show and fiddle workshops there on the 25th and 26th. A house concert just west of St. Louis in Fenton has been confirmed for the 28th then a big weekend at the first ever 5 String Fest and workshops at the Smoky Mountain Banjo Academy to kick off a BIG loop from there to a home town concert and family visit in Pittsburgh, PA (my oldest grandson turns 8!); north to Rochester, NY for a concert and workshops at Bernunzio's music store and then over to NY City for a concert and workshops there!
We have added a house concert at Harry Bollick and Pat's place in Howewell Junction, NY (south of Pougkeepsie) on the way to NY City but still would like to fill in from NY City (May 16-17) back to our homeplace in Southern Ohio. Think along I-80 or better yet, through PA say through Harrisburg, SO, if you would like to host an event on route, please drop me a line.
We'll be home most of the summer this year including hosting an old time Clawhammer Banjo and Fiddle weekend July 18-20.
Hope to see you at an event along the road this year. Details as always at www.Clawdan.com.
Play Nice,
