Trying to Maximize My Time

Posted by Viper on Friday, October 11, 2013

My son is a month old today, and we've settled in to a nice routine at home. A week and a half ago, my wife and I switched nightly feeding schedules, giving me the 6 a.m. shift instead of the 2 a.m. slot. Now I get up early to give  Little Man his bottle and just stay up to get ready for work, but there's a little extra time for me to do what I want.

With about a half hour, I can either play my fiddle or go for a run. My goal is to start alternating days between one and the other. Since we made this switch, I've been able to practice five times in nine days and run twice. This bit of "me time" has been rejuvenating, but I need to remember to make sure my wife gets some "her time."

My practice sessions so far have succeeded in knocking off most of the rust from not being able to play but once in the three weeks prior. My focus has been all on the bow and just playing (or trying to remember) the tunes I have already learned in my first year of playing the fiddle. I haven no intention of learning any new tunes for the foreseeable future. I just want to maximize my time to achieve some measure of improvement while time is still tight with a new baby in the house, and I think my best approach is try to gain some mastery over my bowing.

However, a half hour is not a lot of time, but it's all I've got for right now. Might as well make the best of it -- or rather, make the most of it. With such a short window of time, it's important to bear down and focus just a couple goals for the session. Right now that focus is bowing rhythm and dynamics. The recent video by Bruce Molsky on bowing has been a great help.

The challenge will be coming up with clear cut goals for each session. Hopefully, that will sort itself out soon.
