Hellicore Light G String

Posted by martynspeck on Monday, October 7, 2013

I'd tell my office that I got a new G string but I don't think they'd understand.

Actually I ordered a full set of Hellicore Lights but when I played for a bit before putting them on, I decided that the rest of my strings sounded okay for now but the G sounded like a wet noodle.

So I put the G on.

So far it has made a real difference. I can get better tone easier out of the string and when I hit the G on the D and E strings it rings much easier.

Now I have a G Hellicore Light, D&A are Hellicore Mediums, and the E is a Larsen Tzigane.

I have 2 Goldbrokat E strings now to replace the Tzigane plus a Hellicore Light from the new set and the Medium that I didn't put on 18 months ago when I got these Mediums.

Martyn, I've used Helicore mediums for eleven years and have always considered those about as light as one can get, so I'm curious. Why the G light? Or maybe...how does a smaller G help you get better tone? Interesting.

A heavier gauge string has more mass and therefore takes more energy to get it moving. A lighter gauge string has less mass and takes less energy so its responsiveness should be greater. One of the pieces of data I had along the way also was that if I rosined up or really dove into the string I could get better tone but it was louder too. Now I can get better tone at lower volumes with less effort.

Since I was having trouble getting good tone out of the G but not the other strings I reasoned the experiment was worth the risk. I have the other strings available in light now as well and I'll experiment with them as the current mediums need replacement.

One aside, the G light didn't seem that much thinner than the G medium.
