Hoover (my current most favorite fiddle) and I have been together now for about a year. We have enjoyed one another throughout the year fiddling in cold (anything below 72) and hot (anything above 98), rainy days, sunny days, dreary days, happy days and sad days. I have been approached several times with people telling me "that is one of the best sounding fiddles I've every heard" ( wow-what would they think if I could actually play really well) .
All had been well and harmonious until two weeks ago....A bright sunny day playing outside with no shade, no breeze, just a few random gnats and face flies and of course the lovely residents from the nursing home. All was going well, although I was beginning to get a bit dewy (and the husband sweaty) when suddenly with no warning the most awful stench arose from Hoover, the smell of damp, musty, wood...(gag, cough, wrinkle nose). No explanation, no reason and of course no apology from Hoover. I could barely concentrate and took every opportunity to move Hoover away from my face. I noticed some of the little ladies fanning themselves-was it heat or smell? I had my back to a wall and the more they fanned their little fans the more the smell pushed me back, trapped by my own fiddle, I felt helpless, dizzzy, desperate.
The odor is still there, perhaps not quite as poignant but none the less sniffable.....so as I ponder our fiddling relationship and want to continue on I am faced with what to do. So therefore I have come to the conclusion that a dab of vicks placed strategically under my nose will have a wonderful snowball effect...
1. keep me from smelling that horrid odor
2. Keep my sinus's clear
3. Repel mosquitos
Should be a win win situation....Of to the store to get Vicks, which then causes me to ponder "Do I rename Hoover and call him Vick?"

Try cleaning out your fiddle with rice (dry) pour in several tables spoons of rice, shake it around vigorously for a few minutes and then dump the rice out along with all the other stuff... do not reuse the rice in the fiddle or cooking..

Coffee beans are good for removing odors as well. Maybe a little Febreeze on some cotton inside the fiddle. Make sure you can get it back out.
Vick's is what cops allegedly use to mask the smell of dead bodies, so you are probably in good company.

Ah, coffee beans, good idea...love the smell and it won't be as offensive to fellow players
