I've been into steel strings for the longest time. Precisions, Prims, then thought I'd be migrating to Lenzner Protos.
The finger problems have put a stop to all that. Avoiding pain is an amazingly good motivator!
Booker has downtuned Zyex strings, and I'm liking them.
Problem is, I can't play my other fiddles since they have steel strings on them, and all my other strings are steel.
Zyex are just a bit too expensive for me right now.
So I just bought some D'Addario Pro Artes, and I'm gonna put them on "Stinky".
I've liked Pro Artes before, just not for fiddle tunes, so we'll see how they do.
Stinky is the lowest at the nut and has the shortest scale length, so it would be nice if I can actually tune them up to standard pitch and still play them.
(LATER)
Initial impressions while still tune a half step flat (GbDbAbEb, or F#C#G#D# as the tuners read it) are good. The overall sound is darker than Booker with the Zyex, which isn't unexpected, but it seems to have cured Stinky's nasal sound!
Well, we'll see how those impressions hold up.
Maybe what Stinky really needed was synthetic strings!
I'm really liking the Prim E string with the Zyex. I don't like the Goldbrokat E with the Pro Artes so far, so I'll be swapping it out for something else.... so far I haven't liked the D'Addario E strings very well... maybe I'll try another Prim first.
There IS a small possibility that I'll order some Prim Lights... that MIGHT be a way I could still make steel strings work for me.
