Finally! Some cello progress!

Posted by Chet Bishop on Monday, February 18, 2013

Today I finally gave in and brought the cello inside, warmed it with a heat-gun, brushed on hot water, slathered on hot hide-glue and clamped the ribs home, one at a time. Good glue squeeze-out all around. I think the joints will be good.

cello ribs installed in the mold

I also spent some time whittling on that lion-head scroll I began a while back, made progress on a fiddle-repair for a friend, and repaired a non-functioning front porch light.

So the day wasn't wasted, though I did spend an inordinate amount of time on my website, trying to pat it into shape so that Google will recognize it and folks can find it. :-)

Next I will trim the excess rib length from each corner and plane them square, parallel and smooth. Then it will be time for linings.

Which do you enjoy building more, fiddles or cellos ? and why? Don't say both, you know you have a favorite. Just looking on(having never built either) seems the larger pieces for the cello would make it easier to work with?

Violins and violas are easier, and far less expensive to build. I can have several violins/violas going at once, and they don't get in the way of each other. The cello mold is huge and heavy by comparison, and it takes up the whole bench, when I'm indoors.

When the weather is warm enough to work out in my shed, a cello is a very satisfying build. But I can build three violins/violas in the time it takes for one cello...and four, for the cost.

There ar good things about each. If I can establish a market for ANYthing, I will be happy. Even double basses. They are monsters, but I could be happy building them, too.
