Today a young man came to work on his viola-- so it was a rather distracted day...but I did accomplish a few things:
I discovered that the C-bout ribs I glued in place last night were actually not in good contact, so I will steam them off and re-install them. No biggie, but not happening today.
I laid out and began cutting the scroll and neck for the cello, and, partway through, decided I really needed a carving mallet. (sigh...I know...) Anyway, I had a chunk of a neck billet left over, and a piece of an old sledge-hammer handle, so....
Anyhow, I also have needed a drill press, as, when my youngest son moved out, he took with him the only drill press we had; so I found one (1/2 hp, 5 speed, 5/8" chuck) on Craig's list, and this evening we went and got it.
The scroll is cut out and the volute trimmed about halfway around the curl (all the outer-most turn). All the ribs are bent, and the glue-pot is full-- so tomorrow evening I hope to try again. Great weather we are having, so I may get to do a lot more outside.
Be patient...the cello is on the way. :-)

Last night was short, but I did re-glue the C-bout ribs, and carve the pegbox about half-way. I can see three of the pre-drilled peg-holes, so I am at least half-way done on the inside. I had drilled them all with a 3/16" bit on a drill press, while the outside surfaces were still parallel, because in the past, if I tried to do it later, I would not get them straight. BTW, the carving mallet works very nicely. In the past I would just grab a chunk of wood. :-)
Tonight I hope to install the remaining ribs, but I will have to wait and see just how tired I am when I get home. I started work today at 4:30--so far so good, but I have a long way to go--just taking a break at the moment.

We'll see what happens this weekend. Ann and I will be accompanying friends to a barge launch where I work, on Saturday (here is a video: gbrx.com/Videos.php?expandable=2), and will get home early afternoon. If I feel OK, I will try to get the remaining ribs on the mold, and finish up the pegbox, at least.
Hurting pretty badly tonight. I just got home from teaching.
I won't let it grow cold, fiddlerd! :-)
