Song List, First Installment

Posted by bj on Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Okay, more than one person on here recommended keeping a song list or book. I'm a greenfreak paperless kinda gal, so I decided this is the best venue for my song list. I'll be adding to it periodically.

Bilem Cabbage Down

Little Liza Jane (baltimore version)

Oh Susannah

Old Joe Clark

Cumberland Gap

Angeline the Baker

The Rosebud of Allendale

Redwing (well, almost. I'm working on it.)

Soldier's Joy (another almost.)

I appreciate your green-ness,

however, you can get narrow scraps of sometimes

very snazzy paper for free at printshops.

These work great for single column lists, and you could print

(by hand) on both sides.

You need a hard copy of some kind in your fiddle case for jams.

Jams go a lot smoother if one of the jammers has a list to work

from, and it's better if they're working from YOUR list!

Or you can use the blank side of a long shopping receipt.

Or the backside of some junkmail flyer.

Recycle when the list is obsolete.

I know people are big on lists and paper. I'm a bit old fashioned, as well as being green. I depend on my memory. It's like a muscle. The more you use it the better it works.

I'm always interested in hearing and recording new (to me) tunes.  I can appreciate playing a common repertoire, especially when newbies in a group need to feel some competence now and then.  After the 5th Midnight on the Water, though, the jam gets stale.  "Never be afraid to play a tune you don't know."  :-)

Well, I have the tunes I wrote to throw in the mix. I play those all the time . . . though I still can't quite play what's in my head with them, since my skill level just isn't there yet.

And a big part of my practice every day is to keep my Pandora Fiddle Channel (in my forum sig) playing for a good part of the day and if I hear a song I think I can play along to, even in small part, I reach behind me and immediately grab the fiddle.

I guess I've been playing about as long as you have but I'm not sure whether my song list is as extensive as yours. What I mean is I "know" tunes but it's just the basic melody. Are they tunes that should be on my list or is it reserved for songs that I can play as well as the ones found on this sites music list?

OOPS! We had a malfunction, fairportfiddler!  What's the url to that list? the simple one in your browser's location window?

As to how well I play the songs on my list. Pretty badly still. Though I'm getting better. If I just play single string melody I can get through them all with a bit of feeling and no mistakes. I'm trying to work in the drones and double stops and some interest in the bowing patterns with accents and such. That's the part that gets complicated for me. But I am getting better.

With simple melodies I can play a lot more than is on the list. I'm constantly having things popping in my head and picking them out on the fiddle, whether they're "fiddle tunes" or not. Things like "Norwegian Wood" by the Beatles, or some cool Maria Muldaur bluesy growly thing like "Any Old Time", or some old gospel piece or whatever.

I don't know what all that stuff was on the last message. Anyway your playing sounds alot like mine. I actually have the double stops on Angeline The Baker down pretty good (not as good as Oldtimer but I'm getting there). But I still have problems with slurs.
