Going to my first open Jam this Sunday . . .

Posted by bj on Friday, July 18, 2008

I'm going to the Noontime Jam at the Asbury NJ (Warren County) Grange Hall. The folks last weekend who told me about it say that it's for all sorts of music-- oldtime, bluegrass, celtic, cajun, etc. So I'm going to see if it's something worthwhile for me to learn and to play with others. Or at the very least meet some folks who like playing oldtime and don't mind a beginner sitting in once in awhile. The guys who told me about it play around half oldtime and half older 1940's-1950's bluegrass. At least one of them will be there. They were sweethearts and very encouraging.

If any of you are in this area, I hope you'll introduce yourselves. I'll be the one hiding in a corner trying to keep up, playing a rather shiny mass produced crappy fiddle, since the Stockbridge still isn't ready. Unlike Briggsy, my avatar and mascot, I'm a brunette human, with a lot of hair, and I'm somewhat short.

In addition to Old Joe Clark and Bilem Cabbage Down, I've managed to learn Cumberland Gap, and Soldier's Joy, and I should have Angeline the Baker down by then, since I've got the A part down already. Maybe one more, depends on how much it rains this weekend. The more time I spend inside, the more tunes I'll spend time on.

I'm finding it easier to learn the tunes now, though I still play them slowly. My left hand is getting better, the finger/ear coordination is starting to happen almost automatically, though every now and again I'll still occasionally trip. I think by next summer I'll be able to play out at jams regularly without embarassing myself. I hope. And I should have a fairly extensive repertory of tunes by then.

Anyway, I'll report back on the Asbury Grange Jam and if it's worthwhile I'll post it in events.

Hard to attend a Jam when you're given the wrong info! Empty parking lot and nobody home. I've got a call into the grange president to get the right info.

Hell, and I was hoping to HAVE a few! And driving for no reason with the price of gas the way it is, isn't exactly great for the budget. Oh well, at least I got some fabulous fresh picked organic raspberries from a roadside stand. They didn't make it home . . . I pigged out on 'em.

Part of me likes to play the fiddle and another part of me likes to find locations that I've never been to before.  I think the 2 complement each other.  I often think of that as I drive around looking for the jam or gig, hoping I got the directions right, just before I'm too late or too lost.

And, part of me apparently taps on the 'post comment' icon too much.  :-)

LOL! Well, I heard from the Grange President and I had the right building and the right Sunday and the right time, but the piece of info I was missing is that since the Grange Hall isn't air conditioned, they discontinue the jam for the months of June through August, and resume it in September. And I  almost wish that the guy who told me about it also made a useless trip. Almost.
