I've been rather frustrated for quite a while by my inability to record videos... especially BOWING videos. Well, finances have been a problem. The thought occurred to me recently that maybe I could turn my computer into a video camera with a webcam. But then, looking into it, I realized that the specs on most webcams weren't good enough, and the good ones were expensive, just like everything else.
Then, somehow I stumbled on this post about using a Sony Playstation Eye camera instead of a normal Webcam. It has a USB connector just like a normal webcam, but it has a higher frame rate. And not very expensive either. AND.... for a while now the Linux kernel has had built-in support for the Playstation Eye. So I decided to spring for it.
And, I've managed to record video with it... even though it's marketed as being for the Playstation, not PCs.
I THINK it's good enough quality video to read the bowing motions.
And I've managed to record audio with it.
So, far, I haven't been able to record both, but of course, I'm working on it.
The downside of this venture is that of course, I'm having to pay attention to geeky details that might actually be even MORE headache inducing than a bowing discussion!!! ;^)
I also noticed there is a driver for Windows, and went over to the XP side of my computer to try it out. The Linux side definitely is giving me better video.
Although I just found out that the VLC video program I'm using on Linux is also available for Windows, so I probably will try that too.
Maybe I'll even be able to use it for Skype.
Anyway, wish me luck- I'm not all the way there yet!!!
