Bowing Breakthrough

Posted by bj on Friday, July 11, 2008

Why does it all seem SO SIMPLE now, when former practices from yesterday and before it was all a brain drain to get it right?

I had my lesson with Steve last night, and I was being my usual dense self, but something stuck. I don't know why, I don't know how. But I came home and played every song through that I know and didn't flub bow direction a single time. It just now happens naturally.

And this morning, first thing, before I even HAD MY COFFEE, I repeated that amazing feat.

And it just makes so much sense now, when yesterday, before my lesson, it was a pile of mud to wade through.

Of course, I still have to fight to keep the bow perpendicular, and get the pressure right, and keep my left fingers going in the correct directions and to the exact spots, and  . . . and . . . and . . .

Congratulations, bj!

Sounds like you got some important information finally
hammered down into your subconscious brain.

There is so much going on in fiddling (as you imply yourself)
that that's the only way to really fiddle well... some stuff just has to become second nature.

But now you've got me wondering, bowing-freak that I am,
exactly what patterns he's got you learning!

According to Steve there are only three patterns. :)  Everything else that other people (including you) call other patterns is a variation on putting those simple three together in a different way. And he's broken it down for me through five or six songs.

Do understand something. I'm mostly sawstroking at this point and only throwing a shuffle or a GA in on rare occasions. I'm still working at a very elemental level. But now that I figured out what the problem was, I'll be able to more easily work this stuff into the simpler songs without it screwing around with my poor sore head.

I figured it out. The lightbulb moment happened kinda sorta because I realized I was "counting wrong". I wasn't doing the "and a" before the one. :) Steve calls them pickup note(s). So every time I'd get to the downbeat I'd be upbowing and turned around and frustrated as hell. So damn simple and stupid.

Ok BJ, does this mean the cat is safe now?

brya31, the cat is ALWAYS safe. It's the fiddle and me who are in trouble!

Keep it up BJ, it's the little moments like those that keep adding up and before you know it you're on to the next "Impossible" thing which you'll tackle just like you did this one. Mainly you should be impressed that you did it B.C. (before coffee), I can't do much during that time myself :0)

SlowPockets, you are for sure right. BC was the tipoff that it wasn't a fluke or a dream!
