Did ya hear??!?!

Posted by Freischutz on Monday, August 6, 2012

I turned on the news earlier this evening and the first thing I hear was some scandal about Gibson (guitars)... what?

Rewinded it a bit and it seems like this esteemed company is in trouble with the law for illegally importing wood from Madagasgar and India! Rosewood and ebony! They paid a 300,000? fine to save themselves from being prosecuted!

I know the feathers must be flying over at the Guitar-hangout, but heck, we all know Gibson. They make a lot of other instruments. That surprised me! Is this old news that I'm just now hearing?! Gibson, I can not believe it. That deep-rooted, respected company getting involved with such a thing. What is the problem? Can anyone enlighten me?

Gibson imported some wood that was on a protected species list...some of this wood, from what I understand, has been used in some of their guitars for some time, until the passing of certain laws. This is more about an overbearing government trying to get its hands into everything it possibly can, and figuring out some way to tax and control it. If you Google the Lacey Act, you can get an idea of what it involves. Gibson was accused of importing illegal or protected wood from Madagascar. The government was very overzealous in the manner in which it was handled, which was an armed response (this took place about a year ago, I believe). Is an armed response really necessary to serve a warrant to see if a guitar company might have some wood that is on a 'protected species' list in some government office?

If this happened a year ago then why did I just hear about it yesterday? Did they do it again?

The raid happened a year ago. Yesterday Gibson settled out of court with the Department of Justice.

In true media fashion I don't think they reported all the fine details...they only wanted to make some one look bad.....Boy they could have a field day with me :)

I think that there are some networks that could have a field day with just about anyone. They seem to be rather good at that. (that's why I watch Fox) ; )
The only thing is that they (Uncle Sam) aren't just prosecuting places like Gibson, there also have detained people that have tried to leave the country with an instrament that has Brazilian Rosewood. Apperantly they've had plenty of field days with that as well.

For a more balanced view of the problem that the law is trying to address, you might wish to check this out, which is a video featuring Bob Taylor, of Taylor Guitars talking about the issue. By the way, Fox News isn't allowed in Canada because of a law on the Canadian books that won't let a news agency tell fibs. HAHAHAHA!
