I think I'm going to stop posting my recordings until I'm absolutely perfect in about 50 years.

Well, once you've passed age 70 you're no longer expected to be "perfect".
So, you only need to wait 29 years.. ;-)
Joking aside, I've such mixed emotions about posting recordings. My goal is not to be perfect. Instead it's just to genuinely like what I play.
I do get closer to it every year. I haven't posted any recordings of my playing so far and sometimes I wonder whether I'd be better of posting them - to get feed back from other members or am better off just keeping at it by myself. At the moment, I'm still keeping at it by myself mostly because I have very peculiar opinions about what my fiddling ought to sound like and doubt that many other people share those opinions.
But that's just me. I hope you won't stop posting completely. I've enjoyed listening to what you've posted so far - and you sound like you're having fun and making good progress.

OTJunky and Rich-I do it to mainly to show my progress, how I'm getting better at playing by ear and to show a tune I love and enjoy playing for others as much as I love playing them. Because I don't have any real life tangible fiddle friends to hang out with. I do have my brother to jam with from time to time while he plays some back up with his mandolin or another instrument, anyway...It's not really about feed back, per se, but I'm starting to regret posting my recordings, somewhat, unless my playing is much better. I am also still discovering my own sound, a particular sound I love and the way I'm trying to convey a tune.
I guess I'm just being my own worst critic at the moment.

Good for you. IMO, that's exactly what's needed to become a really good fiddler.
Don't over do it though. It's not supposed to be a life or death struggle. If you get really frustrated, take a moment to laugh at yourself, then go back at it. Some things just take time..

Hey, John. What others on this hangout don't tell you is that they make a supplement which speeds up the time it takes to get to "expert" level on this thing we call the fiddle. You, too, can enjoy being an expert on the fiddle in only three months--that's right--three months if you order now. Only $19.99 plus shipping and handling to Humbled Enterprises....

OTJunky wrote: "My goal is not to be perfect. Instead it's just to genuinely like what I play" and I think that's a wise example to follow. I actually came to that conclusion in the shower after I practiced this morning. (Really.) I realized that the tune I'm working on has some distance to go, not because it doesn't sound like a couple of recordings that admire, but because I'm not satisfied with it yet.
I post music files here, imperfect as they are, because I think they say something about me as a fiddler and I think it helps to build a sense of community to get to know each other in that way. I'm long overdue to record something again. Maybe tonight.
I won't be alive in 50 years. Hope you'll post a few more files before that time. : )

Humbled-I have some knotholes for sale. They're only .25 cents a piece. Real cheap in this economy.
ajisai-I will eventually.

John, if no one did anything creative unless it was "perfect," there would much less beauty in this world for everyone to enjoy. God knows we could use more things of beauty, and more things to enjoy.
Music does not have to be perfect to be enjoyable. Keep posting. If nothing else, you may give someone some much-needed inspiration.

I find that I listen much less to "perfect" recordings than I do to recordings that, though they may be less than perfect technically, so obviously contain the heart and soul of the player that you can't help but tap your toes, nod your head and smile. You are one of the latter group, my friend.
Now, me-- when I play I do it wholeheartedly . . . unless that dang little red light on the recorder is on . . .

Thanks, bj for those kind words. I think I'm the same when that red light is on. I seem to play a little better when I'm not recording myself. As soon as I strt recording I start messing up it seems.

You're doing just fine. Keep up the good work. In fact just to give a wee bit of courage to you I decided to upload a newer version a a tune I posted a couple of years ago. It's not much better than 2 years ago but I just wanted you to know every tune on this site played by others rather just learning or experienced players may help another down the line.
By the way i noticed in a earlier posting to this thread you mentioned that you don't have anyone to play fiddle with. I'm not very good but I would be happy to hang out and maybe we both can learn a little together. I'm just down the the road in WS.
