I got the new Helicore 5-string set, and changed out only the C-string, leaving Dominant mediums for the other four. Great sounding instrument. Some people might like the whole set to be Helicore, but for right now, it has "found its voice".

In order of priority with my customers, they like Zyex, Helicore, and a couple like Evahs.

Specifically on a five-string fiddle, or on any violin? I attempted to use a small viola C string from Red Label, but it sounded lousy, so I figured that, if nothing else, I could switch back to the Dominant C; but the Helicore C sounded perfect, even though it was with the Dominant violin set. I also have a Thomastik five-string set, but have never tried them.
On my regular violins, I always start with Dominants, and folks can change them to something else if they want. On violas I start with either Dominant or Evahs, depending on what I am trying to accomplish.

Ah. Do you make a lot of them? There seems to be a growing market for the 5-stringed fiddles.

Only about a dozen different models of 5-string fiddles and violas. Customers in 8 countries so far. ;-D

Wow! I'm impressed! And wistfully desiring to emulate your success. I will remember your recommendations regarding strings...and any other advice.

I have a lot of help. I do get a lot of feedback from customers, though, and don't mind passing it on. The bigger the market, the more opportunity for all.

Mmm. I see. Well, I work alone, but I still hope to get good enough to make a living at it-- even if it is only for retirement, though I hope it will be sooner.
Thanks, Michael.
