I installed the endpin, fingerboard, nut and pegs this evening, and carved a tailpiece of Osage Orange wood that a fellow had sent to me for that purpose. Hard stuff. The Osage orange was extremely blond, which was a surprise-- I had always thought it was either dark brown or yellow-orange in color. Evidently the pieces I had seen before were old and oxidized. This was about the color of cream, or a little more yellow. I didn't want it to collect dirt and rosin, so I put a single coat of shellac on it as a sealer. it is quite yellow now.
It's getting late, though, so the bridge, soundpost and strings will have to wait until tomorrow. Must be getting old... :-)
