Varnish completed, Setup commencing.

Posted by Chet Bishop on Thursday, July 12, 2012

I installed the saddle tonight, and affixed the nut to the fingerboard, shaped it and cut the grooves.

Discovered I don't have a five-string tailpiece. Might have to make one, to use until the Wittner tailpiece arrives.

Anyway... the last coat of varnish is still fairly soft, so I didn't want to push my luck and try to glue the fingerboard on tonight. Tomorrow evening will do...especially since I don't have the tailpiece. (sigh...)

I'm pretty sure I have more coats of varnish on this one than any I made in the recent past-- my very first one had a lot, because the varnish I used was brown, but faded to yellow-orange overnight, so I kept adding coats. Still yellow-orange. But this one I like the result. It is not too thick, but just enough to get that clear look--as if you can see some depth to it. I tend to go pretty thin on my varnish.

At any rate, the missing tailpiece is a set-back, but I will still have it playable this weekend, I trust, even if I have to make one from scratch.

Congrats on getting done with the varnish! I'm trying to picture making a tailpiece. Good Luck!!

I prefer buying them, of course, but I have made them before, on several occasions. It isn't too terribly hard.

Very exciting time. Can't wait to see the pictures. Any tire-kickers yet?

Nah...as I have mentioned. I am still wringing my hands and chewing my nails, waiting for my website to be put back up, so I can even get it looked at.

I did order three more five-string tailpieces from IVC, today, which will be here by Wednesday, but I think I will make one anyway...I want this thing playable by Saturday. :-)
