Indiana Fiddlers Gathering

Posted by brya31 on Saturday, June 28, 2008

Well, I made it to my first fiddlers festival.  Wow was it fun.  I had no idea that so many things can be played as instruments.  I got to see a guy play a wash tub bass....I always thought this was just a Hee Haw Show gag until I watched the Foghorn String Band,  I now know it can be done and sound quite good,  I got to see a gal play something that looked like a big wooden salmon with strings,  one lady was playing something that looked like a harp, but was square and she seemed to be using lollipops to play it, and of course there was the guy who actually played a saw.  Needless to say I was in awe most of the day.  I sat in on the beginners training session, then sat in on the master players session for fiddlers.  Wow.  Luckily I know I suck right now or I would have given up hope because those guys were darn good and some of them were just kids.  I really liked the Flat Mountain Girls.  I know Prairie Acre had posted on this site before, but I didnt get a chance to watch them.  I had a fun day and cant wait to do it again, um  but next time...I will bring sunscreen.   I am red...white....red..white...red....white,  now I will put my blue shirt on and see how many people salute me!  Time for me to go practice.

Sounds like FUN!

Yes, definitely a sunhat and sunscreen next time.

Meanwhile I'm trying to guess--

Big wooden salmon with strings-- dulcimer?

square harp played with big wooden lollipops-- hammer dulcimer?

saw -- saw   :)

I asked a friend who played in a band there..you are correct    one was a appalachian dulcimer and the other was a hammer dulcimer     These festivals are gonna teach a newbie like me a lot.

Hey midwest fiddler or strokestyle...do you remember the name of that band that was on the open stage that played that song....I think it was called cornbread and butterbeans    I really enjoyed their music, but I sure the heck cant remember who they were

Ah, yes, a fine time was had by all.  I even lured Pete and DK back to the campground for some singing Saturday night.   About open stage, the only band I remember was (the absolutely stellar) White Mule who were first on Saturday.

I'm pretty sure it was the "Ache'n Back String Band" from Mattoon, IL that played that song. They are great folks - the fiddler Ann White is a member here (annillinois).
