Such a simple thing . . .

Posted by bj on Sunday, June 22, 2008

I'm now making a conscious effort to turn my head to the front and keep my eyes shut while playing.

This means that instead of trying to watch directly or even in the mirror, I have to depend on the sound I hear to tell me how I'm bowing and where my bow is. The first day was pretty awful, but I'm finding that it's making a difference now. I'm hitting that sweet spot on the strings and on the bow with increasing consistency as I get used to it.

They tell you when you learn to dance that you shouldn't be looking at your feet. This is the same sort of idea.

And I've found that my neck, shoulders, and jaw aren't tightening as much, since I have to concentrate more on the sound. It's a form of distraction.

Well, I don't get it right EVERY time! But I find if I trust my ear to tell me where the bow is and where it should be instead, I tend to get it right more often. I am doing this more on my opening warmup scales than otherwise, but I'm starting to play this way on songs now too, though the more complicated songs still flummox me.

I should post an mp3 so you can hear how bad I am still, but I'd be embarassed. Maybe in a few more months. I am making definite progress.
