The Crucial First Test of the New Apartment...

Posted by fiddlepogo on Friday, May 11, 2012

...is how the fiddle sounds in it, of course!!!

After my Friday afternoon gig, I picked up a couple of things for the wife, then went home, rested a bit, then loaded a few more instruments along with the gig instruments into the car, for my first load to take into the new apartment.

I pulled out Carthy and started playing some Old Time- sounded great.

The living room and dining area is really one big room, the only difference being that the dining area is green linoleum tile, and the living room area is carpeted.  There is quite a bit more natural reverb in the room- of course, there's nothing it it! There is no sound absorbing gunk on the ceiling.

After a bit I realized I hadn't put the shoulder rest on!!!  So I put it on, and was surprised at the difference in tone, because it's getting reflected back to me instead of being absorbed.  And you know, at least on Carthy, I DON'T like the shoulder rest for Old Time... I was leaning that way, but hearing the sound reflected back to me allowed me to tell WHAT I don't like about it- it delays the attack phase of the notes by a hair, and that screws up the rhythmic effect of the shuffles!!!

However, on Irish stuff or klezmery and Eastern European sounding stuff, I LIKE the difference in sound... it seems to draw me farther into those styles WITH the shoulder rest on.

I'm eager to try the new apartment's acoustics with Booker, because Booker has more treble bite, and it MIGHT react differently... also it's got a different shoulder rest.

Later, after doing some moving related stuff, I tried Carthy in what will likely be my bedroom, and to my surprise, even without a linoleum section of the floor, the rather small bedroom was fairly lively. That sound deadening stuff in the old apartment really does work.  Should be interesting to see how it changes when it's packed with too much stuff!!!

Anyway, for practicing I find having some natural reverb inspiring.  I'm not so sure how good it will be for recording, though.

I met some of my new neighbors... there is more of a core social group in the new place... they're having a pot luck in a week... if I'm not too exhausted from the move, maybe I'll play some music for the event, meet a few more neighbors.

The acoustics may change a wee bit after your wife and you hang the curtains. When I was a kid, I practiced the guitar in the closet because the acoustics were great in there, also the bathroom.
Good luck with the new place!

Well, no curtains are going to be hung... the apartment has some pretty good blinds, and that's probably good enough for me and the wife both.
