Today I couldn't stand the suspense and installed the D'Addario Zyex strings on "Stinky", the darker and older of my two Knilling 4KF Bucharests.
So far, so good... similar in feel to the Pro Artes, but with a little more "oomph" somehow... hard to describe... maybe a more focused sound... in any case, they are versatile, and sound decent on Old Time, Irish, or waltzes and song airs. On Stinky at least they aren't very loud.
A big and pleasant surprise happened when I tried recording all three fiddles: Stinky with the Zyex got a good natural balanced fiddle sound right off the bat, with no tweaking. The Eastman sounds good live, but did not record well, and Booker, my main fiddle and other Knilling sounded good but sounded like it was overwhelming the microphones with some distortion, even though the excess level warnings didn't come on in Audacity or on the USB interface.
The funny thing is that I would say the other two fiddles sound better "under the ear", but Stinky records better... go figure!!!
The cut finger is problematic... it's not right on the fingertip, so I can play some, but playing does pull at the wound a bit, so I don't want to play too much. I bought some Super Glue to glue it up.... I've got a gig tomorrow, and I can't have it being "iffy".
