Welcome to the club Careane! I've had my banjo 5 days now!
I think a teacher is a good idea if only to get you going. I've got my firts lesson next week!

No doubt as you start reading and searching on the forum topics here you'll run across teachers who can help with online lessons, etc. But, you might start by searching You Tube for Professor V's videos. I think his name is Todd Ehle. He also has a website where you can play his videos for free. Lots of stuff there to get start with. And, many folks will tell you to order Gordon Stobbe's DVD on bowing. Good luck!

One or two lessons just to deal with stuff like tuning and pegs (pull out to turn, push in when you want it to stay where you put it, but don't push TOO hard!) would help a lot, just to get you started off right.
You can buy strings one at a time, btw. When you string up that E string, make sure that there isn't so much wrapping that it's rubbing against the side of the pegbox. If it is, you can crack the pegbox or cause the friction to break the string again, so that's really important to avoid. You can just unwind and pull a bit more through the hole to avoid that. You need it wrapped around 4-5 times for it to stay, and the first wrap should be snug up against the bit coming through the hole. Don't overlap the wraps, make sure they go on nicely lined up.
I believe there are still some of the old music moose videos floating around. They're fun for beginners. You can google for music moose, Jeff Wisor or Sue Cunningham. They were the instructors who made those videos.
Have fun!
