Fiddle Sticks 3/16

Posted by tomthacker on Sunday, March 16, 2008

I have managed to get my cracked back together on the quarter fiddle. The button is still a little out of place and may warrant some extra work. The placement of the button really doesn't look as bad in real life as it does in the picture. I need some material for making cleats to support the cracks before I glue it all back together. As for the finish, I just need a clue. This is a cheap, mass market type fiddle and I know it isn't a varnish finish, probably some sort of lacquer, and I'm not sure how to make the defects disappear.

Hmm, visit the furniture polishes at your favourite shop, and buy a scratch-hiding polish of the correct darkness.  Put it on and wipe it off with a cotton cloth.  Do it again if you need a darker tint.

For the top coat, a spray-on lacquer of some kind is warranted.  I'm not sure what kind to get, so I defer to someone else's input.  I saw my repair shop use some, but I didn't look at the brand on the can.
