I just received the Gordon Stobbe "Twelve things your right hand should know" dvd over the weekend plus his "Fiddlers Red Book of Scales and Appreggios". All I can say is this stuff is pretty cool. I started going over the video, and working just on my bow grip and how to build and modify your grip to create accents.
I began to play "Cotton Eyed Joe" using the accents the way he described and it made an immediate difference in the way the tune sounded. This video is a very good instructional video and I can see that it is well worth the money. He explains it very simply which is very nice, and I will be able to play this over and over until I develop some good techniques.
Paying for lessons and traveling back and forth with the price of gas is almost not worth the time. Or trying to have someone else teach you snippets of things they know was very frustrating for me cause I really want to play the fiddle well, and not just solely on what someone wanted to show me. Also I am willing to put the time and practice into it to really studying and learning it. Depending on some one else to learn what I wanted to know, I could see, would be an obstacle for me. Because, I want to learn faster than what people want to teach you.
Jamming and practicing is not a problem either. I have gotten over the shock of trying to play in front of others by playing bass. Plus there are tons of places to jam around where I live, that I could find some place to play just about everyday if I wanted too. Between the grassers, old-time and dulcimer communities will always fill my perpetual need to play.
So I if anybody is just a beginner just like me I would suggest for them to get this video. It will save you tons of money in the long run. Plus give you some really thought out well planned studies to work on.
