fiddle blues

Posted by oldtimewine on Friday, April 15, 2011

I have found that when you dont have your fiddle(or the sound post drops in my case) for 3 days it tends to make a person go crazy. Obsession? Maybe so but all i know is a day off without a fiddle is not a day off at all!

Doesn't that mean it's time to get a backup fiddle?

Yes, Carl has it right. Fiddles do need maintenance from time to time. So a second fiddle is a must-have for all fiddlers. Also, it's not a bad idea to have a beater for those trips into the country during sunny humid days either, trips where maybe you don't wanna take the good fiddle. Keep an eye on craigslist, you'll be amazed what turns up.

But bj, what happens when your 2nd fiddle is in need of repair as well. The answer is, of course, a 3rd fiddle.......and a 4th and so on and so on until a terminal case of FAS sets in. I know. I've got it.

"Hi, my name is Eric and I have FAS."

I can understand having a main fiddle and a back-up, but any more than that, I would think it would be hard to keep them "played in". But maybe it's like the diffinition of an alcoholic which is someone who drinks more than ME, and using that criteria, you people with more than 2 fiddles, got a problem. Oh, I'm not sayin' you'll admit it, you'll make excuses and blame everyone else for your problem, but I ain't buyin' it!

Can a person who has "BAS" attend a meeting of "FAS" folks? and what if I have a little bit of both with a lot of "FTAS" (fiddle tune acquisition's syndrome )thrown in.
"Hi my name is Paul and I have BAS FAS with a some FTAS"

Mudbug, Yes I agree. However, in obtaining a better fiddle, I'm still left with three (playable ones), one of which I'm willing to sell. My starter still hangs on my wall with no back (had a pressed plywood back) and one that I bought for $35 because I like the bow, sits with a big top crack waiting for me to attend Fiddle Repair Week at August Heritage (WV); could be years yet. Guess whatever problems I have in this world, I don't really have FAS.

Well I have even a better one..I dropped mine on the floor and broke the finger board, and bridge off. I cried over that one....I have an extra fiddle but it is not the same.
