...in my musical mind, anyway!
I was wondering if I would feel burned out on Irish tunes after the St. Patrick's gigs were over.
Nope!!!
I learned enough new tunes that didn't make the cut for the setlist that I've got plenty to work on.Plus, I've woken up first thing in the morning at least twice since with really cool Irish tunes going through my head- the only problem is that I don't know what they are yet- I need to get to a local session to ask.
I think part of the appeal of the Irish tunes is that they are mentally somewhat challenging for me... familar, yet just foreign and difficult enough to be intriguing.
I did play Seneca Square Dance and Turkey in the Straw at a local jam today though, and it was fun.
I think I'm also going to continue incorporating some Irish tunes into my normal gig routine- I use American History as a framework for the music, and especially focusing on the 1840's when so much was happening in American History and American music- the Irish Emigration was in full swing, "minstrel" shows were invented and popularized the banjo among whites, the Germans came in 1848 after a failed revolution and brought the waltz, and the Gold Rush capped it off. Anyway, it only makes sense to play some Irish tunes in the context of mentioning the "potato famine" etc.
