There is a guy who calls himself Heatbox who does this sort of thing. Not quite as 'artsy' as this.
Neat what one can do with enough tracks, the proper looping tools, and a shipload of talent and creativity.

What impressed me is that she made the tracks on the fly and layered it all on the spot, and in an incredibly intricate way. Shipload of talent is right.

I dunno if you poked around about Imogen, but there's also a cut of her and Jeff Beck recreating Rolling and Tumbling. Dang, it's wild . . .

I think that Imogen mentions Heatbox, or someone like him, in an interview she did for Billboard. There's also a vid of her shopping for instruments that's a hoot and a half.
