How do you lose a 22-foot-long Cadillac? Just forget where you put it. That's what I did Friday evening at the Rockbridge Festival this past weekend.
All-in-all it was a great event, I had a ball, and even shared 20 minutes of fame with the Durham/Greensboro, NC, Jam crowd. Saturday morning we were jamming in the dance workshop tent and wound up with an invitation to play during the "open mic" time that afternoon. We adopted the name, "New Lost Synapses." I had been to some Durham and Greensboro jams in the weeks before the festival, so we weren't total strangers. It is a real treat to play music with people who know what they're doing. Rockbridge was my first OT music festival, and it will not be my last. I've already blocked out time for next year's Rocbridge and the Hoppin' John Festival one week later.
Oh, yeah, the car. Over a period of an hour and half, I made three or four laps of the camp ground searching for it hauling the banjo and a folding chair along. It was daylight when I parked it Friday evening, and pitch dark when I began looking for it about 11 p.m. with no flashlight, no clear recollection of where I had left it, no jacket to ward off the chilly mountain air, and the the need for a restrrom break. A kind soul at the registration tent took pity and joined the search with a flashlight. As it turns out, I was parked in the farthest, darkest, least populated end of the camp ground. During my wanderings I had passed within 50 feet of that huge car three or four times and never saw it there hiding behind a truck. The Lesson? At outdoor festivals, always have a flashlight handy and park near the port-a-potties -- you'll never lose your car.

It's good you found it. If your dad is anything like my dad you would never ever have heard the end of it for the rest of his life (and beyond, if he could figure out a way to manage it!)

Sorry I missed you Dan, but I did hear you playing... What a gorgeous weekend it was....the weather had a hint of Autumn...the jams were fanstastic....the dancing, especially Sat night with Brad Leftwich's band playing.....the caller had us rocking......Rockbridge is just 20 miles from where I grew up as a kid and has become my favorite all time OT festival. Maybe next year....I'll have flashlights in abundance !!!
