I've been mainly absent on the internets lately because I'm in a mad rush to finish and defend my PhD. This was precipitated by good news, I got a 3-year postdoc I wanted right here in Tucson. This is great because I get to do the project I want to in the place I want to live, but it also means I'm working nonstop towards a very short deadline to finish.
Anyway, I'm posting here in case any of you are the anonymous person who bought me a violin at the Folk Shop. If so, thanks anonymous person! It's quite lovely! They wouldn't tell me who, they only said someone had seen me playing very beat-up violins at various events around town and decided I needed a shiny new one. It's true, I have a soft spot for very old, needy violins full of character. However, I also really appreciate having a new, solid violin with no health issues to worry about. It seems to have a very nice, even, robust tone and I'm looking forward to seeing how it develops as it breaks in. I am thinking it will be the perfect companion to ride in the double case with my old red one.
In fact, I'm breaking it in now. I wish I could say I was playing it in, but I actually set it on top of a gently vibrating piece of equipment while I go back to the dissertation...sigh.

Your post strikes a chord! I have fond memories of my husband holing up in a little tiny room in the U of A library so he could finish his dissertation.

Wow, congrats on ALL of it! Though it does stretch the imagination a bit thinking of you, the queen of fiddle rescue, playing a spanky new fiddle . . .

Bravo Michele !! Hard work does pay off....congrats on your post-doc !! The anonymous gift says as much about the impression you make on others, as it does about the selflessness of the people you surround yourself with. Now you have the chance to imbue character, your own character in a fiddle that will pass down to other hands, many many years from now !!!

I think this one will go in the Chicken Soup for Fiddlers....what a wonderful story!
yes, there are wonderful people out there and we need to remember that. If I were a rich person, this is exactly what I would do, go around doing stuff like this. Congrats on all your hard work, and remember to pass on that random act of kindness! Hopefully it will get round to each of us sooner or later :-)

Wow!! Congrats all around--on your secret benefactor (sorry, it wasn't me) and especially on getting that Tucson post-doc. And congratulations to the rest of us Tucsonans who get to keep you around for a while! Hmm, since you now have a proper, shiny new fiddle, I suppose you don't need that old beat-up one with the painted finger board. I know a good home for it... ;^)

maybe.... not :D
But, if I ever see another fiddle like the one with the painted fingerboard, you'll be the first to hear about it.
