Thoughts on retakes and repetitions

Posted by FiddlerFaddler on Monday, December 10, 2007

Jesper and I traded a couple e-mails, and then I realised that the e-mails would make a good blog entry, so here you go...

> Driving the family crazy in the other end of the apartment.  Hearing me play and sing the same thing over and over again.  At least I had to do four takes, with two guitars and two voices.  And add to that the re-takes every time I made an error :-)

Ah, the family has no choice but to put up with you.  Except for the family members of musicians, non-musicians have no idea how much effort it takes to prepare for and then to execute the recordings.

Not only is there repetitiveness involved in the recording, but think about the hundreds and even thousands of times we practice a particular tune or song until we are satisfied with it.  Then we have to keep practicing so that we don't get rusty.  It can be very boring at first, but as it gets smoother we become encouraged and it becomes more and more fun to practice.
