Mtn View Folk Festival 2010

Posted by Fiddler on Thursday, April 22, 2010

Another year -- another Folk Festival in the foothils of the Ozarks in the wonderful town of Mountian View, Arkansas. Another long weekend of playing tunes, visiting with friends and making new ones. The Wildflower B& B regained its annual moniker of "Old Time Central" and the Porch Hoppers returned to its porch. (The Porch Hoppers is the collective name of whoever shows up on the porch to play old time music.) And, as usual the Ozark Spring weather was its typical mix of pleasant days, cool evenings with an occasional spitting of moisture, but none of this damped our enthusiam for sharing the music that we enjoy playing.

In addition to the numerous groups playing around the Courthouse Square and a block away in the City Park, there was a more formal presentation of music on a stage set up in front of the Courthouse. With microphones and a good sound technician a larger crowd could hear a variety of music styles. And for those who just couldn't sit still to the music, a wooden dance platform provide ample room for an impromptu square dance or jigging or clogging or two-stepping or waltzing.

FHO member and contributor M-D and an associate organized and planned all of the performances on the Courthouse Stage. They did a great job of lining groups up that highlighted the music of the region. Even the Porch Hoppers did a set of unrehearsed tunes and demonstrated how a group of people from other places have collected and preserved the regional music traditions. Above all they showed that playing this music is fun.

My head is filled with new tunes and old ones and memories. My fingertips are a bit tender. My shoulders are a little stiff. But, I am satisfied -- and looking forward to next year!

Kirk,

You all did a great job, whether on stage, or on the porch. It's the participants who make, or break it, and this year's festival was a major making. We're already working on next year's festival, and even the 50th annual, in two years. I hope you'll be a part of that, as well, as will be the rest of the Porch Hoppers, etc.

As busy as things were, those few days surely did go by quickly. I'd like to have been around more, and played more, but I'm playing injured as it is, so it's probably a good thing that I couldn't. :o)

Good times and we'll be back if all things are willing! Thanks Porchhoppers! Thanks Martin and all the people that put this festival together!
