I finally decided to do the deal on the German occupation fiddle, but I waited too long- it was gone!
I went to a music store in a neighboring town... they did have a Czech fiddle in the same price range, but it was a dog.
But they did have a different brand of guitar picks, "Alice Picks".
They're made in Japan, and supposedly "Alice" is the name of the plastic.
They look and feel like standard Fender picks though, except they come in more gauges, especially heavier ones. I'd been using Fender Heavies for a long time, with the pick turned sideways so it feels thicker, but they are only .96 mm, IIRC. I bought some 1.20 and 1.50 mm Alice picks, and was astounded at the improvement in tone and control. I think this is going to trigger a lot more guitar practicing, which short term might hurt the fiddle, but long term, it strengthens my hands. I'm also getting into singing bluegrass songs. At the bluegrass jams I'll take my guitar, leave it on a stand, play fiddle on all the other stuff, but when it comes my turn, sing a song with the guitar instead of playing a fiddle tune (which is usually one of a list of 5 or 6 I know the Bluegrassers know!)
Allergy season has started for sure, and that's no fun for me, but at least my energy level is high because of the amino supplements.
