Hey Folks,
Spring is here in the southwest and we have had our first 90-degree day. Nights are in the 50’s and it really cools down nicely in the evenings so we can still sit out. The garden is in and though it is small here (only one 4 by 8 raised bed) we have tomatoes, beans, chard, carrots and beats. Even one cucumber plant has survived so far! We have had some of the chard a couple of times and the tomatoes are still barely bigger than a golf ball, but they are a’comin’ on!
This will be the second summer that we stay mostly out here but I will travel back east for my Clawcamp East and a couple of other concerts and workshops on route. I’ll be leaving Arizona around June 21 and the first planned stop is Lawrence, KS for a concert on the 25th and workshops (both clawhammer banjo and fiddle) on Saturday the 26th.
My planned “get home” date is July 1 and I’ll be there for the month working on the shack, clearing the old trailers off the land (any one want an old 1967 28’ Airstream Ambassador project? I’ll give ya a good price!) and enjoying the sounds and smells of the Appalachians. Several of you have said you are planning on stopping in for a visit, lesson and tune or two, which will be nice.
I have been asked about a fiddle weekend there this year and am thinking we could do one July 24 and 25. Like the olden days Clawcamp you can arrive Friday afternoon (the 23rd) camp on the land and we’ll do low key make our own meals. Say $250 for the weekend and we need at least 5 folks to make it a go. Email me directly to sign up and I’ll get it posted on the hangout(s) also.
Clawcamp East happens again at Jorma Kokenan’s Fur Peach Ranch July 30-August 1 this year. As a bonus, Bob Carlin will be joining the teaching staff. We are also scheduled as part of the Fur Peace Ranch concert series for Saturday night, which is included in the student fee, and open to the public. Camp is half full already so I encourage you all to sign up soon. There is a special price for Hangout members until June 1 this year. Don’t miss it! Never know when the next one could be.
We head back to AZ right after Clawcamp this year and am sorry to say we will miss Clifftop. Only the 2nd time ever! BUT, the reason is a good one as I will be teaching again at Gerald Jones’ Acoustic Music Camp in Arlington (Dallas/Ft. Worth area), Texas. Clawhammer Banjo class there and we like to consider it our Clawcamp Texas! Yep, the state is big enough for its own Clawcamp. Miss Jennifer should be along as coach too. Yep, it’s a long way across Texas so we like to stop and stay a spell on the way through.
Well, that’s the news for now. If you would like to schedule a workshop or concert along the route, please email me and we’ll work hard to make it happen.
So, I’ll close as always by saying “Play Nice”
Dan
