I watched the opoening ceremony yesterday and I was delighted to see that there was a section devoted to the fiddling traditions in Vancouver.
Also I was amazed by the left handed fiddler. There was a guy playing the fiddle holding the fiddle in his right hand instead of his left. I was awestruck. I couldn't believe it, I've never seen someone play the fiddle like that before.
It was amazing. There were heaps of people playing the fiddle and they were dancing whilst playing the fiddle. Oh man, I wish I could do that!!!

The bad news is not everybody was really playing. Which to me explained how they could do such athletic moves and not have the sound they were producing suffer for it.

Hey There. Saw your post and thought I'd chirp in here.
I was involved in that portion of the ceremonies. From when Andre Brunet (Quebec) came on stage and started to fiddle the up tempo tune, directly after the fiddler in the canoe, I composed the fiddle tunes for this segment called Rhythms of the Fall. The 2nd fiddler was Daniel Lapp (BC), the 3rd fiddler was Sierra Noble (Manitoba Metis), the 4th fiddler was Samantha Robichaud (New Brunswick) and the 5th fiddler was April Verch (Ontario). The left handed fiddler was Ashley MacIsaac of Cape Breton.
I composed the tunes up until and including April Verch and then Maple Sugar was played, the most popular Canadian fiddle tune of them all composed by Ward Allen.
Ashley then did his bit with dancer. I played in the ceremonies as well but on the stage with the symphony during this portion. What an absolute honor & thrill to be a part of this ceremony. Glad you enjoyed it.

Thank you Calvin for clarifying the record and congrats for your great contribution. This group of world class fiddlers and your splendid compositions created a performance befitting the international stage. Of the three performers that I know, they quite proficiently dance and play fiddle simultaneously. Oh yes, they started fiddle before they could write and now have worldwide acknowledgement.
