I decided that I just couldn't bring myself to go $700 for a fiddle. The range around $400 seems to be a price point I'm comfy with- for any instrument, not just fiddles. Part of it is me being a bit of a klutz.
Part of it is that I GIG with fiddles around seniors (some of whom have Alzheimers) and even around kids occasionally. I had a CLOSE call last Friday night. So I want something REPLACEABLE.
But I had to do something... the last two gigs I haven't been happy with the sound of my fiddle.
So I called Steve Perry, listened to some fiddles over the phone, and almost to my surprise, went for the Eastman VL100. Pretty normal choice, nothing exotic. And if somehow iffit's just not "me" it should sell fairly easily, or be a welcome trade-in.
I was surprised by how much sonic info you can get about a violin over the phone- not like playing it of course, but way better than a total shot in the dark.
And I'm pretty confident it'll be a big step up from the Knilling 4KFs.
So it should be here in about a week... more then, of course!!!

I've had my eye on some of Steve's fiddles -- I wish I could afford one...
Hope to hear how you like your new fiddle (and hear some recordings!).
